It’s difficult to picture the North East without seeing the silhouette of the Angel of the North stretching out over the rolling hills on the Gateshead skyline. Designed by esteemed sculptor Anthony Gormley, the statue has become one of country’s most recognisable landmarks and has guarded the region for the past two decades.

Set above the riverbank paths of the Durham peninsula sits the UNESCO inscribed world heritage site of Durham Castle. Steeped in over 1,000 years of history, the Castle now forms part of Durham University. Grab your comfortable shoes and scale Penshaw Hill – where you can explore Penshaw Monument and take in the view of the leafy suburbs of Sunderland and South Tyneside. The grand landmark, a folly which can be seen for miles around, was built as a requiem to the Earl of Durham in 1844.
