Magical Light Trails in North East England 

Its that time of year; when the temperature starts to drop, winter coats and hats are pulled from the back of the wardrobe, and we all become partial to a Pumpkin Spice latte or two. Luckily, as the dark nights draw in, a spectacular array of festive events are set to unfold throughout the North East, which are sure to get you feeling festive, with a little wonder, sparkle, and delight.

Here are just a few highlights from around the region:

The Alnwick Garden Winter Light Trail, 2023
The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland

Explore the Alnwick Gardens in a new festive glow this Christmas, as it once again is transformed into a mesmerizing wonderland of light and sound. This magical, award winning, experience unfolds from November 13th until the 7th of January. Tickets are available now, with the Winter Light Trail offering a captivating experience for all. 

 

Northern Lights
Leazes Park, Newcastle

A brand new light show will illuminate the heart of Newcastle City Centre this year running from the 23rd November to January 1st. Located at Leazes Park, the mile long trail promises a captivating journey filled with immersive visuals, stunning illuminations, intricate sculptures and special effects. The route is fully accessible, and includes convenient and delicious festive food and drink spots along the way. Don't miss your chance to witness the Northern Lights this year!

Lumiere 2023
Durham City Centre and Bishop Aukland

Great news! Lumiere returns to Durham in 2023. The event will be bigger and better this year, as it extends beyond Durham city, and shines a light on neighbouring Market town, Bishop Aukland. You can discover over forty mind blowing masterpieces throughout the city and beyond including interactive digital artwork, glowing sculptures, majestic light walls, enchanting installations, and projected displays.

Running from 16th – 19th November, you can enjoy the event for free in Durham City centre between 16.30 and 19.30. Free peak-time tickets are required to see the artworks in Durham city centre between 16:30 – 19:30.

 

Forest of Light
Beamish Hall, Durham

Step into a world of enchantment this festive season with the Forest of Light. In the heart of the woodland, this captivating experience comes to life as the night sky sets. With a mesmerizing blend of illuminations, music, interactive props, and exclusive commissioned pieces, the Forest of Light promises a unique experience found nowhere else. Explore the light trail on various dates throughout November, December 2023, and January 2024, from 4 PM to 8 PM, for a truly magical experience that will leave you spellbound.

Festival of Light 2023
Mowbray Park, Sunderland

Mowbray Park dazzles with impressive light features, including free-standing 2D creations, elegantly lit trees, and a centrepiece projection onto Sunderland Museum. The Festival of Light begins on October 12 and runs every Thursday to Sunday, from 4 pm to 9 pm, until November 11, as well as every day during the half term October break. Beyond the lights, the festival offers exciting children's rides, delicious food, and live music performances.
